PPL application process for record companies

Joining PPL is free.

To join, you must be the owner (or exclusive licensee) of the UK rights to publicly perform and broadcast at least one sound recording.

STEP 1 - E-mail the PPL Repertoire Database team for login details

Access to the PPL Repertoire Database is free to all prospective PPL members. In order to obtain login details for the website, you should e-mail repertoire@ppluk.com to confirm the following details:

- your record company name

- a full contact name for the record company

- the record company’s postal address and telephone number

You will receive a reply to this e-mail within 24 hours.

STEP 2 - Register sound recordings via the application

Once a record company has received login details, the registration software will need to be downloaded.  This will enable sound recordings to be registered with PPL.

For reference, here is a list of all mandatory data requirements.

Please note that in addition to these requirements:

- a record company should submit a full performer line-up for each sound recording registered to ensure that PPL performer royalties can be distributed accurately

- all products should be registered at least 3 weeks before their release date to ensure MCPS requirements are met.

Once the release information has been sent to the PPL Repertoire Database, it will take approximately 24 hours to load onto the system.

If a record company has its own database there are alternative methods of registering its sound recordings, e.g. XML (or other electronic data transfer system).  Please contact PPL for more information at  repertoire@ppluk.com, or on 020 7534 1331.

STEP 3 -  Complete and return member pack

When a record company has successfully registered its sound recordings, PPL will email them the New Member Application Pack.

It is here that the applicant supplies contact and payment details and transfers its public performance and broadcast rights in sound recordings to PPL (or appoints PPL as agent in this regard). This enables PPL to collect any revenue that may be generated from these sound recordings.

You will receive your New Member Application Pack within approximately 10 days of registering your sound recordings with the PPL Repertoire Database.

STEP 4 - Receive membership ID by email

Once you have completed and returned all compulsory parts of the New Member Application Pack, your application will be notified to the PPL Board for approval.  On approval, PPL will email a unique Membership ID to the new member.

Once you're a member

As a confirmed member of PPL, a record company is required to register all repertoire, that it controls the rights to, on the PPL Repertoire Database. This will help PPL ensure that members’ revenues are maximised. More information about how revenues are allocated.
