PPL signs reciprocal deal with Swedish society SAMI

12 June 2008

PPL has today announced a full reciprocal deal with Swedish performer society SAMI (Swedish Artists’ and Musicians’ Interest Organisation) after a long period of cooperation between the two organisations.

The reciprocal deal covers PPL and SAMI members for the exchange of equitable remuneration of broadcast, cable retransmission, private copying and public performance of sound recordings in the UK and Sweden. The agreement means that performers from both countries will receive up to 10 years worth of back dated revenue.

PPL’s Head of International, Laurence Oxenbury, said, “Sweden has a long history of making great international pop music and we are pleased to be working with a society that represents these artists.”

Sweden, as well as being home to many successful worldwide artists is a fruitful ground for many PPL members who chose to record in the country due to its many top producers, such as, Max Martin and Denniz Pop.

Stefan Lagrell, Managing Director of SAMI, said, “We are very glad that the negotiation has come to this good result. The UK repertoire is very popular in Sweden and the UK is an important country for many Swedish performers. We have been exchanging revenue for a while and this agreement puts the exchange on a contractual level.”

UK chart successes Robyn and José González are a few of the Swedish artists who will benefit from UK airplay royalties, whilst UK acts such as Madonna, Duffy and Hot Chip will benefit from their popularity in Sweden.

Fran Nevrkla, Chairman & CEO PPL, said “I am delighted about the signature of a formal agreement between SAMI and PPL.  I see this development simply as yet another milestone in the process of creating even better and closer relationships with our counterparts in Scandinavia which only can bring benefits to our respective constituents."
