Chairman's Statement

Welcome to the PPL website.  If you are visiting the site for the first time please bear in mind that as a true service organisation, it is essential for us to offer a wide range of services to a very broad variety of individuals, companies and organisations.  So, whoever and wherever you are - a recording artist, session player, backing singer, orchestral musician or other performer, a record company, a licensee, politician, or just someone that loves and is interested in music - I hope you find the site useful and informative.  Welcome back if you have visited us before!

PPL will be 76 years old this year as you will discover from our history section.  The organisation sits at the heart of the music industry and performs a key role by collectively managing, enforcing, licensing and monetising specific rights vested in PPL by all its constituents including all the record companies and the whole performer community, both in the UK and around the world. The income streams generated by PPL from broadcast, public performance, dubbing and certain new media usage of sound recordings once perceived as the ‘icing on the cake’ have now become fundamentally important for everyone by having a crucial impact on the success and profitability of our particular sector of the music industry.

The overseas income generated by British repertoire abroad is also growing very fast and we shall increase this source of revenue even more in the immediate future.

Whether you are an individual performer or a record label, please register your repertoire with PPL immediately and ideally before you make your recordings available on-line or ‘release’ them in a physical format.  This service is free and no membership or administration ‘fee’ is payable.

Worldwide consumption of music has reached unprecedented levels and continues to grow very fast.  We want consumers to have easy and legitimate access to music and we wish to see our licensees – the users of copyrights who are our customers – being happy, successful and profitable.  We should never underestimate the importance and value of music and the many ways it can create atmosphere and really help businesses grow.

However, music, and its use, MUST be paid for.

In the music environment the British have always punched well above their weight and the United Kingdom has the highest per capita spend on music in the world.  Historically our musicians and their talent have made an enormous impact globally whilst enhancing our culture and making a significant contribution to the British economy.  PPL is determined to play a significant role in ensuring that this continues to be the case going forward.

This PPL website is designed as an essential business tool for everyone who works in our fantastic industry as well as being a reliable source of information to visitors who want to know more about music, musicians, record companies and the ways they earn revenues.  We want to hear from you and in the meantime, I hope that our passion for music and our determination to do the best possible job for all our constituents and others will shine through on this site and in everything we do.
Thank you and onwards and upwards!
